Before a Nigerian student can apply for a South African study visa, there are two mandatory payments you must make. Because you have to pay these fees in South African Rand (ZAR), knowing the exact exchange rate is very important so you do not lose money.

1. SAQA Evaluation Fees

If you are going for a postgraduate degree (like a Master’s or PhD), South African universities require you to evaluate your Nigerian university certificates through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). This process usually costs between R1,500 and R2,500 depending on how many degrees you are verifying. You must pay this fee online before they process your documents.

2. South African Medical Aid

The South African embassy will not approve your study visa unless you have paid for a registered South African Medical Aid (health insurance) cover for a full year. Standard travel insurance from Nigeria is not accepted. You have to buy from approved South African companies like CompCare or Momentum. This usually costs about R1,100 to R1,400 per month, and you must pay for 12 months upfront (about R13,200 to R16,800).

How to Pay and Why the Rate Matters

Normal Nigerian Naira ATM cards will fail when you try to pay SAQA or Medical Aid online.

To make these payments, students usually use virtual Dollar cards (like Grey or Geegpay) or cross-border payment apps. Because these apps are funded with your Naira, they charge you using the black market (street) exchange rate, not the official government rate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use Nigerian health insurance or travel insurance for my South African visa?

No. The South African High Commission in Nigeria strictly rejects regular travel insurance. You must buy a Medical Aid policy from a company that is legally registered in South Africa (such as Momentum, CompCare, or Discovery).

How can I pay my SAQA fees or school fees from Nigeria?

Because standard Naira debit cards do not work for international payments, you have two options. You can use a virtual Dollar card (like Grey or Chipper Cash) to pay directly on the SAQA or university portal. Alternatively, you can use money transfer apps (like Yellow Card or LemFi) to send ZAR directly to the school’s South African bank account.

How much Proof of Funds do I need for a South African student visa?

Unlike the UK or Canada, South Africa’s living expense requirement is much lower. You generally need to show a bank statement with enough money to cover your remaining school fees, a return flight ticket to Nigeria, and your monthly living expenses (usually around R3,000 to R4,000 per month for 12 months). Always confirm the exact amount on the VFS Global website before applying.

Why is the ZAR to Naira rate here different from what I see on Google?

If you search for the exchange rate on Google, you will see the official government rate. However, because you cannot buy Rand at the bank for these fees, you have to use financial apps or virtual cards. These platforms use the parallel (black market) rate. Our calculator shows this real-world rate so you know exactly what will be deducted from your account.

Do undergraduates need to pay for SAQA evaluation?

Usually, no. If you are applying for a first degree (Bachelors) using your WAEC or NECO results, you apply through Universities South Africa (USAf) for a matriculation exemption, not SAQA. SAQA is primarily for postgraduate students who need their university degrees evaluated.
