Understanding the Nigerian 5.0 Grading Scale

Letter Grade Percentage Score Grade Points
A 70% – 100% 5 Points
B 60% – 69% 4 Points
C 50% – 59% 3 Points
D 45% – 49% 2 Points
E 40% – 44% 1 Point
F 0% – 39% 0 Points

Most federal and state universities in Nigeria use a 5.0 grading scale. The highest point you can get is five.

Your final score becomes a letter grade. Each letter grade has a specific number value.

An “A” grade is for scores between 70 and 100. It gives you 5 points.

A “B” grade is for scores from 60 to 69. It gives you 4 points.

A “C” grade means you scored between 50 and 59. This gives you 3 points.

A “D” grade is for scores from 45 to 49. It gives you 2 points.

An “E” grade is for scores from 40 to 44. It gives you 1 point.

An “F” grade is a fail for scores below 40. It gives you 0 points.

How to Calculate CGPA Manually

Sometimes you might want to check the math yourself. To do this, you must understand Quality Points.

Quality Points are your grade points multiplied by course credit units. Getting an “A” (5 points) in a 3-unit course equals 15 Quality Points.

The formula for GPA is simple. Divide your Total Quality Points by your Total Credit Units.

Let us look at an example with two courses. Imagine taking Math (3 units) and English (2 units).

You scored an “A” in Math. That is 5 points multiplied by 3 units, equaling 15 Quality Points.

You scored a “C” in English. That is 3 points multiplied by 2 units, equaling 6 Quality Points.

Your Total Quality Points will be 21 (15 plus 6). Your Total Credit Units will be 5 (3 plus 2).

Finally, you divide 21 by 5. Your GPA for that semester is 4.20.

Degree Classifications & CGPA Requirements

First Class Honours 4.50 – 5.00
Second Class Upper (2:1) 3.50 – 4.49
Second Class Lower (2:2) 2.40 – 3.49
Third Class 1.50 – 2.39
Pass 1.00 – 1.49

Your final CGPA decides the class of degree you receive. Schools use clear number ranges to group students.

A First Class degree is the highest honor. You need a final CGPA between 4.50 and 5.00 to earn this.

A Second Class Upper degree is also called a 2:1. You earn this if your CGPA is between 3.50 and 4.49.

A Second Class Lower degree is known as a 2:2. Students get this when their CGPA is between 2.40 and 3.49.

A Third Class degree is for a CGPA between 1.50 and 2.39. A Pass degree is for a CGPA between 1.00 and 1.49.
