Form A Tuition Payments: Official Dollar to Naira CBN Rate Today

For Nigerian students studying abroad or planning to emigrate, paying international tuition is often the biggest financial hurdle. Because the parallel (black) market rate can heavily inflate the cost of your education, thousands of students look to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) official exchange rate to save money on their school fees and living expenses.

The primary way to access this official rate is through Form A—an electronic application designed by the CBN to pay for “invisible trades,” which includes foreign tuition, medical bills, and professional training fees.

How Does the CBN Official Rate Work in 2026?

Following the unification of the forex windows into the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), the “official” rate now fluctuates daily based on market forces. However, it still frequently offers a better, more regulated rate compared to the volatile street value.

When you apply for Form A via the Federal Government’s Trade System Portal (tradesystem.gov.ng), your commercial bank will process your tuition payment using the prevailing NAFEM rate on the exact day of disbursement.

What You Need to Know Before Applying:

Processing Time: While the official rate saves you money, the Form A process is notorious for delays due to FX scarcity. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months for your bank to disburse the funds. You should never use Form A if your university’s payment deadline is only a few days away.

Documentation: To get approved at the official rate, you must upload your valid admission letter, the school’s invoice, your passport, and your BVN.

Direct to School: The CBN will not hand you physical dollars. The approved funds are wired directly to your university’s foreign bank account.

Calculate Your Official Tuition Cost Below

Do you want to know how much your tuition will cost using the official government rate compared to the black market? Use our live CBN Dollar to Naira tracker below. It pulls the latest unified NAFEM rates so you can calculate your exact tuition budget before submitting your Form A application.

Official CBN Rate vs. Black Market

Because the Nigerian FX market operates on multiple tiers, it is crucial to understand the gap between the official bank rate and the street rate. While the CBN rate is used for government transactions, official bank transfers, and customs, the black market rate is what dictates everyday cash transactions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which exchange rate will the bank use for my Form A?

Your commercial bank will charge you based on the official NAFEM/CBN exchange rate on the exact day they disburse the funds, not the day you submitted your application. Because the official rate fluctuates daily, the final Naira amount debited from your account may be slightly higher or lower than when you first applied.

How long does a Form A application take to process in 2026?

Due to ongoing foreign exchange scarcity in the official banking sector, processing times vary wildly. It can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months for a bank to successfully source the dollars and wire the funds to your university. Always apply well ahead of your tuition deadline.

Can I use Form A to send my living expenses (PTA/Upkeep)?

Yes. In addition to tuition fees, the CBN allows students to apply for upkeep/living expenses through Form A. However, this is usually capped at a specific maximum amount per semester (often around $3,000 to $4,000), and the funds must be sent directly to the student’s foreign bank account.

How do I track the progress of my Form A application?

You can track your application directly on the Federal Government’s Trade System Portal. The application will move through several stages, including ADB Reviewer (your bank checking your documents), Approval, and finally Disbursement (when the funds are actually sent to the school).

What should I do if my Form A is delayed and my deadline is tomorrow?

If your payment deadline is imminent and your Form A is still stuck at the “ADB Reviewer” stage, you cannot speed up the CBN. Your only option to avoid losing your admission is to cancel the Form A request and use alternative, faster payment platforms (like LemFi, Sendwave, or a BDC agent) at the black market rate.
