These countries use the Central African CFA Franc (XAF). To pay for semester tuition, hostel rent, or monthly feeding allowances, sponsors in Nigeria must convert Naira into XAF.

How to Send Money for Tuition and Upkeep

Sending money directly from a Nigerian commercial bank to a university bank account in Cameroon or Gabon is very difficult and slow. Instead, parents and sponsors rely on cross-border payment apps (like LemFi or Yellow Card), local exchange agents, or Mobile Money (MoMo). You send Naira, and the exact XAF equivalent is deposited directly into the student’s MTN or Orange MoMo wallet or the school’s local account.

Why the Black Market Rate Matters

Because official bank channels are highly restricted for foreign exchange, cross-border apps and exchange agents process your transfers using the parallel (black market) rate.

The exchange rate between the Naira and the XAF changes constantly. If you do not check the accurate street rate before transferring your child’s upkeep or tuition, an agent might shortchange you, or you might send less money than the student actually needs to survive the month.

Calculate Your Transfers Below

Before you contact an exchange agent or open your transfer app, use our live Central African CFA (XAF) to Naira tracker below. Enter the amount of XAF the student needs for their school fees or pocket money, and see exactly how much Naira it will cost you today.

Today, the Naira Black Market exchange rate for 1 Central African CFA Franc (XAF) is 0.00 Naira.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are the Central African CFA (XAF) and West African CFA (XOF) the same money?

They hold the exact same monetary value and exchange rate, but they are completely different physical currencies issued by different central banks. You cannot use West African CFA (used in Benin or Togo) to pay for things in Cameroon or Gabon. Always ensure your agent is sending XAF.

The fastest and most common method is through Mobile Money (MoMo). Almost all students in Cameroon have an MTN or Orange MoMo account linked to their local phone number. When you send money from Nigeria via an app or agent, the student receives it instantly on their phone and can withdraw cash at any street kiosk.

Can I pay Cameroon university fees using my Nigerian ATM card?

No. Most standard Naira debit cards are blocked from making international payments or ATM withdrawals in Central African countries. You must use digital transfer apps, virtual Dollar cards, or verified exchange agents to clear tuition fees.

How much is the average monthly upkeep for a student in Cameroon?

Living expenses vary by city, but on average, a student in Buea or Yaoundé needs between 80,000 XAF to 120,000 XAF per month. This typically covers decent off-campus housing, daily food, internet, and local transportation. Gabon is generally more expensive.

Why is the rate here different from the official bank rate on Google?

If you search Google, you will see the official government exchange rate. However, because Nigerian banks do not readily provide foreign exchange for instant student transfers, apps and agents must source the currency independently. Therefore, they charge the parallel (black market) rate, which is the real-world rate our calculator tracks.
