Studying in Dubai is very popular for Nigerian students because the visa process is fast. However, after you arrive in the UAE, there are mandatory government fees you must pay to finalize your student residency.

  • Can I work in Dubai to pay my school fees and upkeep?
  • Why do exchange apps use the black market rate for Dirhams?

Because you have to pay these fees in UAE Dirhams (AED), it is highly important for your sponsors in Nigeria to know the exact exchange rate so they can send the right amount.

1. The Medical Fitness Test

Before you can get your visa stamped, the UAE government requires you to take a blood test and a chest X-ray at a government medical center. This is to ensure you do not have any infectious diseases. This medical test usually costs between 250 AED and 350 AED.

2. The Emirates ID

Every single person living in the UAE must have an Emirates ID. It is your official national identity card. You cannot open a bank account, rent an apartment, or even get a phone number without it. For a standard one-year student visa, the Emirates ID fee is usually around 170 AED to 200 AED.

How to Pay and Why the Black Market Rate Matters

Because regular Nigerian Naira ATM cards often block international transactions, parents usually have to send money to students in Dubai using virtual Dollar cards or FinTech remittance apps (like LemFi or Sendwave).

Because these apps are funded with your Naira, they charge you using the black market (street) exchange rate, not the official bank rate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a massive bank statement (Proof of Funds) for a Dubai student visa?

Unlike the UK or Canada, the UAE does not usually require you to leave millions of Naira in a bank account for 28 days. Instead, most universities in Dubai require you to pay a large portion of your tuition fees upfront. Once you pay this deposit, the university will act as your sponsor and apply for the student visa on your behalf.

How can I send school fees to a university in the UAE?

Because standard Nigerian bank cards usually fail for large international transfers, you have two main options. You can use the CBN Form A portal (which uses the official bank rate but can take months to process) or you can use fast money transfer apps. If you use fast apps, they will convert your Naira to Dirhams using the black market rate.

Can I use my Naira ATM card to pay for my Emirates ID in Dubai?

No. Most standard Naira debit cards are blocked from making international payments. To pay for your medical test and Emirates ID at the typing center in Dubai, you will need to use cash, a virtual Dollar card, or have your sponsor in Nigeria send you Dirhams through a money transfer app.

Can I work in Dubai to pay my school fees and upkeep?

International students are allowed to work part-time in the UAE, but you must get a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) from your university. However, the income from part-time student jobs is usually only enough for basic upkeep and feeding. It is highly risky to rely on part-time jobs to pay your main university tuition fees.

Why do exchange apps use the black market rate for Dirhams?

Because Nigerian banks do not have enough foreign exchange to process every student’s request immediately, financial apps source their Dirhams and Dollars independently. To provide instant transfers, they must buy and sell at the parallel (black market) rate, which is what our calculator tracks.
