Many Nigerian students travel to neighboring countries like the Benin Republic (Cotonou) and Togo for their university education. Because these countries are so close, parents are constantly sending money across the border for semester school fees, house rent, and daily pocket money (upkeep).

Since these countries use the West African CFA Franc (XOF), you must convert your Naira before the student can spend it.

How to Send Money to Benin and Togo

You cannot easily transfer Naira straight from your regular Nigerian bank app to a university’s bank account in Cotonou or Lomé. Instead, most parents use trusted border exchange agents, local money changers, or modern money transfer apps. You send them Naira, and they deposit the exact CFA Franc equivalent directly to the student or the school.

Why You Need to Check the Rate Today

These exchange agents and apps do not use the official government exchange rate. They strictly use the black market (street) rate.

Because the value of the Naira against the CFA Franc changes frequently, the cost of sending your child’s rent or pocket money will also change. If you do not check the correct rate for today, an agent might overcharge you, or you might accidentally send less money than the student actually needs to survive.

Calculate Your Transfers Below

Before you call your exchange agent or open your transfer app, use our live CFA Franc (XOF) to Naira tracker below. Just type in the amount of CFA the student needs for their tuition or upkeep, and see exactly how much Naira you should pay today.

Today, the Naira Black Market exchange rate for 1 West African CFA Franc (XOF) is 0.00 Naira.

Below, you can find the live buying and selling rates, a free XOF-to-Naira currency converter, and quick calculation tables.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use my Nigerian bank app to pay school fees in Cotonou or Lomé?

Generally, no. Most Nigerian banking apps do not support direct transfers to Francophone West African bank accounts. To pay school fees, you usually need to use a specialized cross-border app (like LemFi, Yellow Card, or Chipper Cash) or use a local exchange agent who can deposit CFA directly into the school’s account.

How do students in Benin and Togo receive pocket money from Nigeria?

The most common way is through Mobile Money (MoMo). Almost every student in Cotonou or Lomé has a MoMo account linked to their phone number (MTN or Moov). You can send Naira from Nigeria through an app, and the student will receive CFA Francs instantly in their mobile wallet, which they can withdraw at any street kiosk.

Is it better to travel with Naira cash and change it at the border?

While you can change cash at borders like Seme or Idi-Iroko, it is often risky to carry large amounts of Naira. It is usually safer and more convenient to use digital transfer apps. If you must carry cash, only change what you need for the journey and do the rest via bank transfer to an agent to get a better “transfer rate.”

Do I need a study visa for Benin Republic or Togo?

As a Nigerian citizen, you do not need a visa to enter these countries because of the ECOWAS agreement. However, if you are staying for more than 90 days for studies, you are legally required to apply for a Residence Permit (Carte de Séjour). You will need to pay for this in CFA Francs once you are settled in school.

Why is the CFA to Naira rate different every day?

The CFA Franc is pegged to the Euro, meaning its value is quite stable. However, the Naira fluctuates constantly. Because exchange agents and apps source their currency from the parallel market to ensure your transfers go through instantly, they use the “Black Market” rate, which we track live on this page.
