Ghana is one of the most popular places for Nigerians to study. But for parents and sponsors, sending school fees and monthly pocket money (upkeep) can sometimes be difficult.

Because regular Nigerian ATM cards do not work for international payments, you cannot simply transfer money straight from a Nigerian bank to a school in Ghana.

How to Send Money to Students in Ghana

To pay tuition or send rent money, most Nigerian parents use financial apps like Yellow Card, Sendwave, or local money agents. These services allow you to send Naira, and the student receives it directly into their Ghanaian bank account or Mobile Money (MoMo) wallet.

Why You Need to Check the Rate Today

When you use these apps or agents, they do not use the official government exchange rate. They use the black market (street) rate. Because the value of the Naira and the Ghana Cedi (GHS) changes almost every day, the cost of sending money will also change.

If you do not check the current rate, you might send too little money, leaving the student short on their school fees or rent.

Calculate Your Transfers Below

Before you open your app to send money to a student in Ghana, use our live Ghana Cedis to Naira tracker below. Just enter the amount of Cedis the student needs, and it will show you exactly how much Naira you must spend today.

Travelers and students use our calculator daily to find out exactly how much 100 cedis to naira or 200 cedis to naira will cost for quick transport and meals. For bigger transactions, like paying for accommodation or bulk buying goods at Makola Market, you can instantly calculate exactly how much 1000 cedis to naira (or 1000 ghana cedis to naira) is worth today.

Use our live tracker below to instantly convert cedis to naira and get the real Aboki FX street value before you trade.

Below, you can find the live buying and selling rates, a free GHS-to-Naira currency converter, and quick calculation tables.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I send money directly from my Nigerian bank to a Ghanaian bank?

Usually, no. Normal Nigerian bank transfers do not go straight to Ghana. To send school fees or pocket money, you have to use money transfer apps (like Chipper Cash, Yellow Card, or LemFi) or use trusted local agents.

What is the easiest way for a student to receive money in Ghana?

Mobile Money (MoMo) is the fastest and easiest way. Almost every student in Ghana has a MoMo number (like MTN MoMo or Telecel) on their phone. When you send money from Nigeria using an app, the Cedis will go directly into their MoMo wallet, and they can cash it out anywhere on campus.

Should I change my Naira to US Dollars first before sending it to Ghana?

No. Doing this is a bad idea because it makes you lose money. If you change Naira to Dollars, and then Dollars to Cedis, you will pay exchange charges twice. It is much cheaper to use an app that changes your Naira straight into Cedis.

Do money transfer apps use the official rate or the black market rate?

Most money transfer apps and agents use an exchange rate that is very close to the black market (street) rate. This is why you should always check the live rate on our calculator above so you know exactly what to expect before you send the money.

Are the school fees in Ghana paid in US Dollars or Cedis?

It depends on the school. Some public universities allow international students to pay in Ghana Cedis. However, many private universities (and some public ones) charge international students in US Dollars. Always check the student’s admission letter to see which currency you need to pay in.
