If you want to study in a European country like France, Italy, Spain, or the Netherlands, you must apply for a Schengen Study Visa. To get this visa approved, the embassy requires you to show your “Proof of Funds.”

  • Why You Should Calculate Using the Black Market Rate
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  • Does the proof of funds include my school fees?
  • Whose bank statement can I use for my visa application?
  • How long should the money be in the bank account?
  • Can I pay my European school fees with my Naira ATM card?
  • Do all European countries ask for the exact same amount?

This is simply a bank statement proving you have enough money to pay for your rent, food, and transport for one full year, so you do not become a burden on their government.

While every European country has its own specific rule, you generally need to show a bank balance of around €9,000 to €12,000 for your first year of living expenses (excluding your school fees).

Why You Should Calculate Using the Black Market Rate

Because you are submitting a Nigerian Naira bank statement to the embassy, you must convert their required Euro amount into Naira.

Do not use the official CBN exchange rate to calculate your required bank balance. The embassy visa officers know the real street value of the Naira.

If you use the lower official rate to plan your account balance, your funds will be viewed as insufficient in real-world value, and your visa will likely be rejected.

To be 100% safe, you must fund your account based on the current black market (parallel) rate.

Check How Much Naira You Need Today

Are you preparing your sponsor’s bank statement? Enter the total Euro amount required by your target country into our live Euro (€) to Naira tracker below. It will show you the exact amount of Naira you must have in your account today to safely pass your visa interview.

Today, the parallel market buying rate for 1 euro to naira is ₦1,595.

From smaller conversions like 50 euro to naira or 100 euro to naira for travel pocket money, to mid-range transactions like 200 euro to naira or 500 euro to naira for visa applications, all the way up to 1000 euro to naira for university tuition fees. Our euro to naira guide ensures you always get the real street value.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does the proof of funds include my school fees?

No. The proof of funds usually covers your living expenses only (like food, housing, and transport). You must have this money in your account in addition to your tuition fees.

Whose bank statement can I use for my visa application?

You can use your personal bank account or a sponsor’s account. For Schengen visas, a sponsor is strictly expected to be a parent or legal guardian. If you use a sponsor, they must provide a signed letter stating they will pay for your studies.

How long should the money be in the bank account?

Most Schengen embassies require a bank statement showing your transaction history for the last 3 to 6 months. Do not deposit a huge lump sum of money into an empty account right before your interview. This looks suspicious and is a common reason for visa rejections.

Can I pay my European school fees with my Naira ATM card?

No. Most Nigerian banks block regular Naira debit cards from making large international payments. To pay your school fees in Euros, you will need to use the CBN Form A portal (which is cheap but very slow) or use financial apps like LemFi, Grey, or Sendwave (which are fast but use the black market rate).

Do all European countries ask for the exact same amount?

No. Every country in the Schengen area sets its own living expense limit. For example, Italy might ask for a different monthly amount than France or Spain. Always check the official embassy website of the specific country you are applying to before calculating your Naira equivalent.
